Was having a really pleasant re-watch of The West Wing, and Sam and Tobey start talking about mandatory minimums being racist. I completely forgot that this show from the early 2000s had multiple episodes related to the intersections of race, drugs, and the U.S. criminal justice system.

We have reached the "I have super cool graphs that I'm not allowed to post so I'm texting friends" phase of one of my research projects. Can't wait to publish this in 2 to 3 years.

I've now taught Punching the Air three times. Once with preservice teachers learning about the school-to-prison nexus, once with ELA teachers of incarcerated youth, and most recently, as a long-term sub in an ELA classroom in a youth detention center.

As my friends and I get closer to the end of our PhDs, I've heard a lot of, "If I don't get an academic job, I'll just go back to teaching." I am really, really grateful for these last three months back in the classroom—both to remind me of how joyful it can be, but also just how damn hard it is.

AI really has a lot of power to 1) force itself into school and work because it is inevitable, 2) force layoffs or making workers do more, 3) force climate change acceleration, 4) force worker exploitation for those who train it. I wonder who is doing all this forcing. 🧐

Henry and I are absolutely giddy over a road construction notice letter we just received from our township (new roundabouts! traffic calming medians!). I would say we used to be fun, but this is pretty par for the course actually.

Had a man in a pickup truck scream "disrespectful b****" at me today when I had the audacity to...(checks notes)...follow the rules of the road.

I hate the gap between when a colleague sends you the feedback they have for your work and when you can actually read it. Just imagining they put in red font "No to all of this, never write again."

I have been publishing YA novels for 20 years. I have seen a lot of nonsense written about the category, but this HarperCollins imprint has set a new bar.

If anything is “cynical” or tailored for “shock value,” it’s this campaign, which might as well be from Moms for Liberty.

This is loathsome.

They didn’t “curtail the consideration of race“ they empowered white supremacy. This equation of “race” with “Black people” is part of the problem.

SCOTUS's decision today is the latest step in a long effort to disenfranchise Black and brown communities. Mass incarceration has been a devastating tool in that effort.

Right now, 1 in 22 Black voters is disenfranchised because of a felony conviction.
