That's a bunch of money that Maryland should be working with other states to collect from their drivers. Reciprocity. But it works both ways: Maryland needs to help DC collect all the unpaid DC speeding and red light running fines owed by MD drivers. Hey @govwesmoore.bsky.social please step up.

No fares might speed boarding, but likely would risk service cuts. In 2024 fares represented about a fourth of MTA revenue. www.osc.ny.gov/files/report.... So you have to find new funds to replace that or cut service. I'd rather keep fares and use new money to pay for new service, lines, routes.

@mayor.lacity.gov pls listen to what a vast majority of @metrolosangeles.bsky.social riders said when surveyed about their top priorities for LA Metro: safety, security, cleanliness, frequency, and reliability. Not free fares. Secure and speed up the system: fare enforcement, signal prioritization.

Trains magazine on #Metrolink woes. Gotta keep up our advocacy. Good on @calelectricrail.org and all the riders who are speaking up. @metrolosangeles.bsky.social won't find $ for decent regional rail but #LA finds $ for vanity @la28games.bsky.social, unlike #Paris which could do both. Embarrassing!

The problem is definitely real. And this is an issue not just in LA. Here's the Washington Post quoting the head of the Washington Metro Transit Authority: "...everyone who commits serious crimes [on the system] fare evades...not many people are going to tap in [and do crime]."

Meanwhile the LA Board of Supervisors today 5/12 just rejected, by 3-2 vote, a proposed density bonus increase (3rd column), keeping status quo (2nd column), except for acutely low income. Horvath and @supjanicehahn.bsky.social supported the more ambitious proposal (column 3). NIMBY win.

I gotta call out the D Line Villain: Then Rep. Henry Waxman spearheaded legislation banning federal funding ostensibly for tunneling through the Mid-Wilshire "methane zone" at NIMBY behest. This legal restriction forced a 20-year halt to the then Red / now D Line extension west of Western.

#PasadenaCityCouncil Housing Committee meeting 5pm today 5/7 to consider proposal that would effectively delay implementation of eligible sites under SB79 to 2031. Proposal here, at end of agenda: tinyurl.com/54nx6deu

Ok, while $25 billion is probably an understatement, that pile of debt would have been helpful to fund more and better transportation choices, housing, and an abundance agenda here at home @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social. So much for America First....
