If this post looks familiar: I posted this briefly a couple of days ago, then realized I’d messed up the timezones horrifically, and immediately deleted it in shame, as one does 🙂‍↕️

The Traitor Baru Cormorant was the book that brought me back to SFF after many years of not reading much fiction (grad school burnout!) and I remember vividly this sense of awe over how messy/ashamed/ambitious/raw she was as a character. Hugely influential on what I want to write + want to read.

Yes! I think desperation might be the #1 thing that interests me as a writer (and a reader). I have a particularly soft spot for stories about shame, or really any big and ugly emotion. There's maybe a larger issue where readers fear discomfort but I think it's especially true with queer stories.

We have a special guest-edited issue of bleak, angry, messy trans horror coming out in October and I am really excited about it. There are so many incredible stories like this, stories that I desperately want more of as a reader, and so few homes for them. I wish there were more. It sucks!

Thanks, Andrew! All credit to the authors, I just feel lucky to get to yell about their wonderful work!

(It’s very fun to offer students a thousand-year-old poem about being drunk on a boat.)

None of my favorites are online! You’ll have to buy the book!

Wendy Chen’s own work is incredible, too. There’s just something about the work of poet-translators.

Okay, I just did the math and I think it might actually work out to, like, $2/hour. But that is not SO different from 2c 😆 and also I might be bad at math.
