If we assume (big assumption I concede, but probably not far off given attitudes of the time) the majority of women with children (and therefore Grandmothers) are married woman category, the census shows 74% of them recorded as doing “Home Duties.”
Which was sort of the point I was clumsily making.

I going to have to disagree here. This is 1926 we’re talking about, homosexuality was still being actively prosecuted and LGBTQ+ people were being sent to prison.

I was basing that on my family. Both of my grandmothers had jobs when they left school but were expected/told to give them up when they got pregnant, they were East Midlands textile mill workers so very much working class. Social norms in the inter-war period were *very* different to today.

I hate to say it, but for 50% of grandparents the answer will be “stay at home Mum.”

In these days of pitch-and-park I’m told that fishing beds are the current thing to consider. Similar to a camp bed but designed to be a bit sturdier and less lightweight.
