Think this is BIG:

A common stat was that the US was home to 5% (really 4.5%) of the world's pop but 25% of its prisoners.

As of 2026, we are home to 4.1% of the world's pop ... and only 16% of its prisoners.

Some of our 10-point drop is growing harshness elsewhere, but also our own declines.

After 9/11, many Americans opted to drive instead of fly.

But because plane travel is much safer than car travel, the shift led to a surge in crash deaths. Researchers have found that the number of lives lost (2,000+) is comparable to those killed on 9/11.

An example from @ag.state.mn.us essay on "Regulatory Justice", on the Kia/Hyundai car thefts from a few years ago: "This story did not start with social media. It started with corporate cost-cutting at the beginning of the chain."

The term “transphobic” is so inadequate for bigotry like Hegseth’s. He doesn’t fear trans people like some fear spiders or heights. He hates them with a passion. It’s an evil choice, not a psychological malady.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a transphobic slur while speaking at the Iowa State Fair Monday, where he appeared in support of Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, who is running for a third term in Congress.

The president is urging federal prosecutors to bring charges against someone based in part on his political views and those of his lawyers?
Trump: “US Attorney Pirro should re-visit her hastily made decision, especially since it turned out that the ‘gentleman’ involved is a big player in ActBlue, a disgraceful fundraising SCAM, and is represented by a TRUMP DERANGED SLEAZEBAG, Political Hack Lawyer, Norm Eisen”

My latest @ms.now, on ICE’s killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, and on the striking degree to which the media has refused to just accept ICE’s narrative of things.

The extent to which the NYT, WaPo, et al keep stressing ICE has no evidence of its claims seems like a real narrative shift.
Opinion | ICE deserves skepticism of its account of Houston shooting
John Pfaff: Wariness surrounding ICE’s telling of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s killing is well-earned, given the agency’s documented acts of seeming deception and dishonesty.
