This statement is meant to be left-punching, but notice that the most popular left-wing candidates (Bernie, Mamdani, AOC) are superb at plain-spokenness, and it is the moderate wing that usually offers language that has been optimized and focus-grouped to death

In effect, we are relying on the good principles, sanity, and clarity of mind of 7 people to not completely destroy life as we know it.
What happens to our theories in a world where 96% of the world's nuclear weapons are held by states with authoritarian leaders? The core rationale for having nuclear weapons was that democracies needed them to deter reckless, expansionist authoritarian states. We were the "good guys." 6/

Important thread. I had a conversation about this with a family member over the holidays: if you were trying to argue for a non-isolationist American foreign policy, there was once a good argument: keeping nukes out of the hands of dictators who might launch one at a whim. In the Trump era? Uh, no.
We've not begun to grapple with this issue. For example, is it moral to build nuclear weapons for dictators? Or wannabe dictators? Should we allow an authoritarian to have his finger on the nuclear button, with sole, unfettered authority to launch a nuclear war on his whim?

In the concentration camp universe, this is what's known as a filtration camp. A government preemptively takes a whole class of people to interrogate and detain extrajudicially in order to inflict duress on them while arbitrarily assessing their (supposed) culpability.
This is a truly horrifying memo. It says that the policy of the US government will now be to proactively seek out and arrest likely tens of thousands of refugees who entered legally under Biden and subject them to detention, where they will be interrogated about their status.
