AI is a deeply unsettling technology in countless ways: what it CAN do, what it MAY SOON do, and what it means for us and our rapidly-less-unique human talents.

And then there’s this contingent of analysts and thinkers who mostly seem very proud of not feeling any wonder or worry about it at all.

I realized yesterday: the two major sides of the AI debate aren’t “it’s good” versus “it’s bad.”

They are “this is strange and uncertain” versus “there’s nothing to see here, you dolts.”

Antis often get mad at the suggestion it’s very bad, because embedded within that is the claim it is novel.

This seems to be the state of the art in AI generated video, good/bad original/plagiarism, efficient resource use vs. carbon footprint - whatever you think about this you might want to know where we stand right now.

Project is "open sourced" in that all the assets have been made available.

OpenAI announces gyre breakthrough. Axial stretching lets the centre reach unbounded speed on finite energy. Things fall apart, as required by the laws of physics. The rough beast's hour is now known to come round in finite time. They do not intend to claim the prize.

What I'd like to know is if the model that broke into Huggingface did actually find the test answers it was looking for, and if it genuinely was easier to perform an elaborate heist that just figure out the answers for itself, or if it actually went for the higher difficulty challenge.

When arguably the most brilliant mathematician on the planet, Terence Tao, says AI is doing real conceptual work with real innovation, it's real and you need to update your image of frontier models to something well beyond "blurry web jpeg" and "stochastic parrot."

Aand fable is gone from my pro plan. 100$ complimentary usage credits, which I'm not sure I can actually use on the wonderful vanishing model
Poof, there goes Fable again, vanishing like a mirage leaving poor old Opus4.8 in it's place, picking up the pieces.

I have not managed ONE single conversation with this model lasting more than 3 or 4 turns before it dives into the brush.

Jolly Green Giant, end of list.

"But he's a peaceful vegetarian" See that right there is how he gets you.

The Jolly Green Giant is the corporeal manifestation of early 20th century California agriculture. That nice young man has a BODY 👏 COUNT 👏 FOR 👏 DAYS 👏

This dude was very unusual for a Roman emperor.
I have learned that the people who hurt me most often were themselves hurt. This does not excuse them. It only explains them. Understanding is not forgiveness, but it is its doorway.

reclaim the term!
It sucks that "transvestigate" is a term to refer to something hateful instead of, like, trans people solving mysteries in cool outfits.

Vibe coding an app for my own personal browsing and the amazing thing isn't that claude is writing the code for me but that I can explain in my vague way what is wrong with a bug and it understands and fixes it. "Explaining things to the computer" used to be The Job. And now it just.. understands
