INCOMING MULVATRON! After losing the footage 10 years ago, the B-b-b-b-b-b-b-baseball Boys are b-b-b-back. And this time they're joined by a special guest commentator: Mulvatron.
Also shoutout to @omegalbagel.bsky.social for the killer artwork.

I'm gonna need animation journalism to start following the $$$ please.
Literally nothing you have to report would be as interesting as how things are financed. Those numbers tell us "the why" of a story almost every time.
So if, say, someone sold out. For how much?

The animation chat has me thinking one telling thing - in the years since AI arrived, there's not been a ground-up indie phenomenon, like we saw with earlier tech (Flash, etc). It hasn't unlocked anyone's creativity. For all the anti-gatekeeping rhetroic, nothing anyone cares about has been born.

When a chorus of fools tell you something is inevitable it's because they have a vested interest in profiting from it.
Good ideas don't need that kind of dead-eyed rallying cry.

Go watch a bunch of movies from the 70s and notice how many people and especially journalist tell their bosses or people in power to go fuck themselves. We need that energy back on all fronts.
Newsletter: We are in the era of the Business Idiot, where middle management has seized power, breeding out true meritocracy and value-creation in favor of symbolic growth and superficial intelligence. This piece ties together everything I've ever written.

We cannot harm those deemed “undeserving” without also harming many who are supposedly “deserving.” These false dichotomies serve only the most wealthy/elite. MLK was on point when he said that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We ignore that wisdom to our own peril.
My daughter’s speech therapist went out of business because Medicaid reimbursement rates were too low. We do not have Medicaid. I’m going to keep posting this until people understand that when Medicaid gets cut *everyone* loses services.

Also, re: libraries...
You should all be checking out (ha) the LIBBY app.
It's a free app that allows you to get a library card through the app, check out and hold books, and even read them right on your phone. It's really helped with my doomscrolling at night-- my library even has manga! 📚

Reminder to check your public library to borrow stuff for free like video games, books/ebooks, movies (including digital/streaming), and possibly even free museum passes and other goodies

My colleagues at Zenimax QA have voted to authorize a strike. No date on if/when it'll happen.
Good for them! They have the full support of everyone at Zenimax. As the first team to unionize they paved the way for the rest of us and we support them 1,000%

In animation we hear "We want the next Bluey". The cost of doing business used to be making a hundred shows to get a Spongebob. All the other shows? A lot will still make money, and the talent who worked on them could give you the next Bluey.
This makes me so angry - because this translates to "I too would like to make a lot of money"
But let's be real. You would not have published Balatro.
You want a lightning strike- fund 20 games. Fund 30 games. Fund so many damn games that maybe you find the right field to be struck by lightning.

Last year, an author mentioned my shop on her substack. It changed my income so drastically that this is the spike of orders from that *one* mention last year. Word of mouth for an artist can change everything.
