"Cell-autonomous immunity and the endosymbiotic theory: Septins at the origin?”

We explore how ancestral septins may have recognized foreign cells - linking endosymbiosis, organelle fission, and innate immunity.

How common is multicellularity in bacteria? And archaea?
And how does it evolve?

We wrote a short review "On the architecture and evolution of prokaryotic multicellularity".

Septins underwent extensive diversification in the Opisthokonts, particularly fungi and animals where hetero-oligomer formation defines their mechanism, but this is distinct from Archaeplastida & Chromista. Amazing evolutionary story. Amazing evolutionary story. @mcmomany.bsky.social #SeptSRC
