I'm pleased this thread has proved so popular it's such an important and relevant bit of history.
In May of 1940 there was a mass panic in Britain - stirred up by the tabloid press - about 'fighting aged men' who had come to Britain as 'refugees' posing a threat to the women and children of this country - and essentially forming a 'fifth column' that could, at any moment rise up against everyone

I don't do this often but this BBC story made me smile, using our other languages to find lost oyster beds.

Lost oyster beds rediscovered thanks to Gaelic and Scots language
Scientists searched for the inclusion of the Gaelic and Scots words for oyster or oysters in place-names around Scotland's coast.

I'm from the "jumpers for goalposts" era.
I forgot to add that as part of the money making racket, I have to pay to watch my son’s games, AND then often discover he’s not playing, because they stuff the team with too many extra players to take in more cash. We pay the full team dues, coaching fees etc, then our kids don’t even play! 😡😡😡
With the recent FIFA World Cup scandal, the world got to see the over-commercialized tendencies of US sports. Unfortunately, it extends all the way down to youth sports too, which is becoming an increasingly ruthless, exploitative, money-making racket. www.bylinesupplement.com/p/life-and-t...

really appreciate the solidarity of all those who have been victims of hate due to mistakenly being identified as Muslim or Arab, and yet refused to redirect the hatred back towards its intended targets by correcting misidentification
The DHS just posted a vehemently racist image attacking Sikh Americans. This impacts all of us and we need to stand united and reject it.

The most fundamental question in politics is: whose support do you need to win and hold power?

Is it warlords, aristocrats, empires or "the demos"?

If the answer is "billionaires", you are not a democracy but a plutocracy.

That's why democracies *must* erect barricades against capture by the rich
Democratic politics will not serve the people when politicians owe their place and their futures to one or two billionaires.
A serious democratic society simply cannot allow this.

That's £72 million from just two men. (Both, until lately, based overseas).

The average UK earner (full-time) would have to work for over 1,800 years to raise that much.

It's a nuclear strike on any pretence at the equality of political power

We loved this so much we just had to put English subtitles on it, apologies to the French speakers for our translation. But this is what it would look like here in the UK if Farage or Lowe or another of their ilk got their own way.

A simple regulatory step that no party may receive or retain a donation from any person convicted of an offence of dishonesty would seem the appropriate reaction.

“Political parties can’t be laundries for dirty money” is not a principle to which I would see the Courts objecting.
Reform UK has received a second £36m donation in two days, as cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne says he has matched a record-breaking donation announced late on Friday.

Here it is: the Lite version of my New Municipalism project. There's an opportunity for local government reform that nobody expected, but it needs to be genuinely local and democratic. Informal and thus unaccountable regionalisation and mergers won't cut it.

I think what Badenoch meant to say here is: “British employers are dependent on welfare to subsidise a massively underpaid workforce” - particularly when you consider that around 40% of claimants are actually in work.

But that’s just me splitting hairs, I suppose.
