It's finally happened: the improved quality of machine transcription and the greater ability to extract value from unlabelled data means "your tech is eavesdropping on you for marketing purposes" has crossed from "false conspiracy theory" to "true and concerning" www.theverge.com/tech/991190/...

It has become an election of misinformation. Billboards claiming clearly false things have sprung up all over the motu. The worst culprit so far, National. Dirty politics is alive and well in NZ. What a disappointing shitshow, our democracy has become 😕

I am going to die of old age waiting for labour to realise they need to inspire folks, that they need to be a brave progressive workers party on the left. Contesting an election based on being afraid of national criticising them didnt work last time, wont work this time.

If Labour do support this bill it'll likely strengthen the ACT and NZF vote and not benefit National or Labour. The privacy concern, NZ First corralling of cookers - all point that way. The exception being the bigots who want to isolate queer kids from community. It's a bad bill, don't back it.

Large anonymous political donations climb to almost $500k so far in election year
A type of political donation where the identity of the donor is shrouded in secrecy is growing despite a recommendation it be abolished.

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

I'm happy. Not because England lost but because their media would be intolerable in the event of a World Cup victory. Jingoism cranked up to new heights, Oasis music on every highlight reel, TV presenters being smug, hastily compiled TV specials about how football came home.

We've been spared.

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.
People who spiral out overusing LLM chatbots are really just experiencing the kind of brain-damaging stream of unconditional validation that’s always been the norm for the hyper-wealthy, which explains a lot.
Worse than Twitter, private discussions (text, email, whatever) among like-minded wealthy lunatics who are all surrounded by yes-men who talk like ChatGPT in maximum ass-kissing mode.
