Tanzania’s first official wildlife corridor links savanna elephants to rainforest
African savanna elephants in southern Tanzania have an unusual habit: They climb mountains. Up to 1,000 of the pachyderms spend part of their time in the Udzungwa Mountains, clambering up and down ste...

Las altas temperaturas limitan los movimientos del oso pardo cantábrico

Los osos más grandes reducen en mayor medida su actividad con el calor

La cobertura del bosque atenúa el estrés térmico y permite más actividad

High temperatures strongly constrain brown bear movements in Spain.

Larger bears reduce activity more under heat stress than smaller ones.

Forest cover buffers heat effects, allowing more movement in warmer conditions.

How to identify and classify animal fine-scale activity modes and broader movement phases in a single integrated assessment?

We propose a hidden Markov model for this aim and apply it to Cantabrian brown bear tracking data in our paper led by @pabcis.bsky.social

Using data from 125 lynx across Europe, they found that extra-territorial mating excursions are a male-biased strategy, indicating active mate-searching🐈💕🐈

Not all Iberian lynx movements are the same 🐾
Using GPS data of 124 lynxes we found that:
-Resident lynxes avoided human areas
-Dispersers tolerated crossing them
-Reintroduced lynxes were particularly cautious in their new environments
A remarkable plasticity for living in heterogeneous landscapes
🚨 new research: "movement phases make a difference in habitat selection: Iberian lynx diversity of responses to human-modified landscapes"

Prey remains overestimate big prey (e.g. roe deer) and camera traps detect better reptiles. @paellalab.bsky.social
