My very tiny #AvianAugust2026 collection! I couldn't commit to doing them all, especially as I was on vacation for the first week of August, but I'm happy with what I've made! As a person who draws in order to color, I loved the theme of colorful birds.

A series of hot springs with blue water and a stream flowing between them. The gold tones surrounding them are bacterial mats that form in just the right temperature of the water as it flows outward.

I am already fond of this one! Tried using watered down acrylics instead of watercolor for a birch panel, so no glass or frame. Finished edges by extending painted areas to sides.

A boiling hot spring and surrounding area—which was amazing for its textures and colors. Colors are created by bacterial mats that form at just the right temperatures as the water migrates from the spring. From my own reference photo taken at Yellowstone National Park.

Final version of “it’s like fire” using original poem with acrylic paints mixed into spackling on hard panel. Finished with other mixed media elements and a coat of Liquin to seal.

Semi abstract mixed media with predominate red swathes relating to the words of the poem. Copper wire barbed wire was fashioned and fastened, also wooden pegs with copper wire entangled in them.

This is quite different for me but I’m enjoying the experimental play with mediums I haven’t worked in before.
Semi-abstract with bold colors emphasizing red tones disbursed throughout. Several dimensional elements include barbed wire made from copper wire, paper with Micron and Gel pens, wooden pegs and copper wire entangled with them. The poem is one I originally wrote in the early 1980s.

My goal is Phoenix Bird…I may still have Super Chicken. Which is what my husband saw last night. This is a small detail that I hope is getting better. Rising from the ashes, of course, but that still needs more work.
