90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects.

The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

What i particularly appreciate about this piece is that we’re so consistently soaked in rightwing media, both pro/con, that we cease to see alternatives.

Letter in today's Times by climate scientist Sir Brian Hoskins:

"The discourse around net-zero is increasingly decoupled from…science and our changing weather.

"Net-zero is not an arbitrary slogan, rather it is dictated by the laws of physics."

End-of-year summary of City’s 2025/26 season for Guardian Sport.

Ultimately, a more than respectable campaign 🏆🏆. But, the end of an era too. Pep departs after 10 incredible years. Bernardo & Stones also leave.

Any RT’s much appreciated #MCFC

The end.

Except it's not because the beauty of football clubs is that the story never ends.

I think that's why days like today - when people who feel like they've been at a place forever have to leave - make grown-ups cry.

For the first time, the result did not matter to Pep Guardiola and Man City's eternal heroes | Sporting News
Manchester City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Sunday. No one cared. Well, maybe Pep Guardiola did a bit, but only because he can't help himself.

Unfortunately, #ManCity will not be able to face Arsenal at Wembley again this season after Mikel Arteta's side were knocked out of the #EmiratesFACup by Southampton. 😔

Thank God Starmer is in charge, really. If it had been any of his immediate predecessors, we'd currently be at war with Iran, playing lapdog to a deranged US administration, unable to say what we were doing or why.

So many bits of the British state now seem dysfunctional or sclerotic, the country faces immense external challenges, the political environment is both fluid and toxic, but a badger replacing Churchill on bank notes is somehow seen as a grave national crisis.

UK's Climate Change Committee has some of the smartest minds working on modeling the costs of how to get to net zero. And this assessment is likley to be applicable to any fossil-fuel import dependent country.

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
