I've had what might be a new, and possibly even significant, thought about Doctor Who's late 1980s cancellation. This is a free subscribers e-mail, and free to read on the site too, but if you agree, why not become a paid subscriber? Or indeed, even if you don't.

(Morbid thought - I wonder what will be the most recently published issues of Action Comics and Superman on the day I pop my clogs?)

Alas, quality and acclaim are not enough to stop fanboys from moaning because it's not exactly like whatever Green Lantern comic they read when they were 12.

Who needs actors, writers, & directors? Just give me a waxy, dead-eyed approximation of what's in my nostalgia addled, creatively sterile, little brain that can spout banalities & demonstrate to the billionaires who own these properties that they need never employ real artists ever again!

I know the film invites it but I think trying to make it fit exactly into the Donner movies is never going to work and looking at it as a spiritual sequel rather than a literal one & judging it on its own merits works best. That said, if it doesn't work for you, then that's fair.

I love it. The performances are great (despite Routh & Bosworth being too young) & there are moments that make me cheer (all the bits where Superman rescues people). Despite the Donner nostalgia it looks gorgeous & unique & it's telling a Superman story I've not seen before.

I suppose the more obscure ones are going to lean to the higher ratings, because if you've bothered to seek it out, you like that kinda stuff. Still, I found it quite surprising.

I first read a pirated download of it, back when the rights were in limbo, & then bought the hardcovers as soon as Marvel released them. I think it starts off feeling like an 80s UK comic but eventually transcends that & becomes something unique & timeless, which I think fits the narrative well.

Yes, apparently Moore wanted his name taken off it when Marvel reprinted it and asked for his royalties to go to Mick Anglo.

Yup. The silliest thing about Doomsday Clock is that it's a perfectly enjoyable Superman/DC event story but there is nothing about it that demands the Watchmen characters. Any god-level superhero could have taken Manhattan's place. This looks the same. There is no reason for this to be Miracleman.
