What happens when we lose a language is that people have their human rights violated and their self-determination denied. They experience in justice and are harmed in multiple ways. So much more is at stake than culture, tradition, and knowledge.

Today we share a poem from @pen-tlrc.bsky.social read in Tudaga (Tebu/Teda), the language of the Toubou, an Indigenous people of the central Sahara living in northern Chad, Niger and southern Libya. Its alphabet, developed in 1998, is now taught in schools in southern Libya.

Today’s poem from @pen-tlrc.bsky.social is “Dzigbɔɖi – La patience” in Éwé, from Hola Gomado by PEN Togo.

Spoken in Togo, Ghana & Benin, Éwé is a tonal language of around 6 million speakers, rooted in oral tradition and written with an adapted Latin alphabet.
