Only half way through the BioacousTalks regarding BirdNET Live and WOW! This new app has so many fantastic applications, especially with community science. I'm eager to take a closer look at this.

Every year I think I've outsmarted the mosquitoes. Pants, bug jacket, bug spray...
I spent one hour in the Maine woods yesterday taking photos of a woodpecker nest and have counted over 52 mosquito bites on me today.
I love the Maine woods...but the mosquitoes love me more.

Successfully did my first official American Woodcock Singing Ground survey! Somehow, I heard less woodcock during my official run compared to when I visited the area earlier this week.

ARU analysis was going great...until even BirdNET couldn't figure out the difference between Philadelphia and Red-eyed Vireos.
Anyone have any tips of telling them apart? At this point, I'm giving my best guess😭

You truly forget how similar the songs of Northeastern warblers sound until you find yourself having to compare spectrograms and grab outside help.

Has anyone been using Raven Workbench? I was looking for some help with RavenPro and just discovered the suite of programs on the @bioacoustics.bsky.social website that appears to have just been released. However, there is very little information or guides.

This past week, I've been giving myself a hearing test. I'm assessing the detectability of different bird songs and frequency tones among differently composed and structured forest stands.
Results so far: certain sound travel way farther than I expected. This will be interesting to graph.

It's the first day above 50 F day this year in my area of Maine so I took my office outside and made use of my garage sale blind.

Graduate school has my so busy that when I have a free morning, I'd rather sleep in. Unfortunately, that has left me hardly ever going out and birding, something that I truly love doing.
So today, I sat out on my porch, aimed at my birdfeeder, and felt a whole lot better.

My lifer Eastern Screech-Owl!
The species is rare in Maine, despite being found at similar latitudes in Canada. Rufous morphs are generally rarer and more common in the southern extent of its range, so to have my lifer be one in Maine is quite special!

Shout out to the UMaine @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social club! I have never been ice fishing before and haven't gone in 10+ years. Pulling up a black crappie from a tip up just as we were packing up was so exciting. If I had the gear, I'd go out and do it again!

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

In October, I went to the AOS conference in Colorado. It was an incredible experience. I presented my undergraduate research and learned a lot which I've applied towards my current research.

Excited to share I will be at #AOS24! This is the first science conference I have ever been to, aside from one day events, and I'm presenting a poster! I am super excited to get to learn more, meet new people, and do some birding in Colorado.

While I've enjoyed the birds of Florida, I am excited to get to work with the forests and songbirds of the northeast again.
