this will allow longer term autonomous & intelligent operation of robotic systems & I am particularly excited for our first deep space missions with on-device AI & likewise long-running undersea probe missions to assist with things like bioacoustics & biolinguistics research.

Interesting paper on the evolution of acoustic defences against bats in Hawk-moths. They moths scrape bits of their genitals together to produce ultrasound, but exactly how differs across the clade, and has evolved independently several times. #TeamMoth

Great to present at the European Bird Song Network meeting in Bad Vöslau, Austria! 🐦 I talked about our playback experiments, and @dmwiniarska.bsky.social showed how song amplitude relates to body size. Funded by @ncn.gov.pl (2022/47/D/NZ8/00565).

It works! This is a Tascam X8 audio recorder. I've hacked the firmware so you can listen to ultrasound bats around you on headphones live in stereo (and still record at the same time). Hopefully some bats around tonight so I can give it a field test #bioacoustics #bats

If you’re open to a historical angle… Parker’s summary papers circa 1920 and William Tavolga’s body of work are *fascinating*. IMHO, the history of fish bioacoustics research is its own entire field 🐟
