Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

in my teen retail job days, I worked with a guy who insisted that Gattaca was the best film ever made. he brought it up almost every day. I liked Gattaca a lot prior to meeting this guy, but he ruined it for me. I’ve held an irrational grudge against it ever since

Google's quantum chip "performed a computation in under five minutes that would take one of today’s fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years."

This vastly exceeds the age of our universe and suggests "quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes."

Google says its new quantum chip indicates that multiple universes exist | TechCrunch
Google announced its latest quantum chip, Willow. But what really caught the industry's attention was a wild claim tucked into the blog post.

"When I was young I admired people who were clever. Now that I am old I admire people who are kind"--Rabbi Joseph Herschel.
Speaking for only for myself, I suspect that I had to valorize being clever for a while before it could sink in that being kind is a better way to go. I still occasionally forget, but I forget less and less as I go along.
A lot of us thought we were very clever in the 90s-00s.

Just… so clever.

last night I dreamt I was traveling from New York to Cuba in a sort of diving bell-type capsule that moved along the surface of the water. the interior was a small, cozy library lined with bookshelves, with a small seating area in the center and portholes to watch the water.

yellowjackets is a very good show but I’d have zero hesitation about bowing down before that wilderness god. very much a “when in Rome” scenario

“Idioteque” by Radiohead should be considered a Christmas song. it just has kind of a wintry festive vibe

I'm still stunned at the number of people on social media who celebrated the cold-blooded murder of a health insurance executive. Online activism is attracting some of the most cruel and self-righteous people in America. There's a remarkable lack of grace and compassion.
