Beautiful. I remember someone saying that this painting was reminiscent of Plato's allegory of the cave. Now I can't unsee it. But what is the emotion displayed by the lady in the light right there? So mysterious. I love this painting.

Ironically, that's a reason why I draw a comparison with Christianity. A lot of christians just want to go to their local churches & do charity... But at the top of the hierarchy the religion betrays its mission, and so it's on the people at the bottom of the ladder to bear the dissonance... Unfair
I'm a big fan of effective altruism. Not a big fan of how it managed to speed-run what happened to Christianity:
- becomes a state religion
- immediately reverses all of its founding values
- no self-consciousness or cognitive dissonance about it whatsoever for the people in power

Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it:
"But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."

I'm playing through Star Wars Zero Company right now and the writers really make it satisfying to play through these periods of historical upheavals. As you point out: this is only possible because the prequels were not scared of establishing real upheaval! Now the writers get to draw on that.

Nothing to add I haven't said elsewhere except the examples you cite need to die. When prophecy fails, people tend to say "well, guess I was wrong," and the Kahan gun control study doesn't replicate.
