It's always very telling when someone believes that others see the world through abstract and theoretical ideas. White male conservatives view the world that way—it's all a debate. Meanwhile the rest of us materially suffer and die
Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests.

Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade.

Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."
The Alito Court: A rare interview with the influential Supreme Court justice
Justice Samuel Alito discussed his opinion in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the leaked draft and its aftermath, same-sex marriage rights and why he's not retiring yet.

When was the last time an elected Democrat spoke like this on TV? About LGBT people OR cities.
Holy shit.

In the housing universe, we debate unions a lot, but most of us are not of that set. Here is a great piece on the sociology of blue collar workers: asteriskmag.com/issues/15/so...
So You Think You Could Be An Electrician?
Funny how the people telling kids to get jobs in the trades tend to be white-collar.

Something reminded me that a few months ago I prepared a few graphics about the problem of "feeder" suburban bus service for a medium-sized city tram network (e.g., Zurich, Strasbourg, or Bologna), so I'm going to share and discuss them here (everything to procrastinate on annoying academic tasks).

A surprising thing about the "life begins at conception" argument is just how NEW it is, even in Christianity. Some people might know that the Protestants only picked it up from Catholics in the last century, but Catholics started saying it in 1869!

Profit is not the reproductive condition of economic capacity.

People imagine profit as the surplus society needs to keep producing. But investment is credit created ex nihilo, and production depends on inputs that are themselves produced through the same ongoing social process.

The phrase “complementary currency” suggests a binary with official currency that is descriptively wrong. The dollar is already a hybrid of credit forms, created and retired through different institutions, tied to different obligations, and coordinated through public design.

I think you can partly tamp down on this if you explain

"Housing developers and landlords are two different groups. Some developers do wish to rent-seek, but if they're building homes to be sold to private buyers, they are by definition not rent-seeking. They just want a one-time profit."
I cannot tell you how many policy conversations I’ve been privy to where the central dilemma is “we need to incentivize private actors to do something, but for unclear reasons they cannot be permitted to earn any sort of profit by doing it.“

Internet in Australia is rapidly becoming unusable without a VPN due to age verification. You need to verify your age to use some weather and calculator apps now. Scam apps and phishing sites are starting to realise they can just ask for your ID straight up and people will give it up. Insane shit.

OK, not that anyone asked, but let me just explain why my takes re: Tesla stans are what they are and why they're so pointed.

I ended up in conversation with someone who is a pretty big deal in Tesla circles. Had influence with Elon etc.

He didn't know the words "Alpitronic Hypercharger"

One of the little-known secrets of Zurich's transit priority and traffic management policies is that they systematically prohibit left turns to an extent that would never be accepted by a US DOT.

In these 4- and 5-way main intersections, not a single left-turn is allowed. So many such examples.

To make it less wasteful, here is a short thread about the technological story behind the workhorse of the Italian postwar building boom:

The "solaio in laterocemento."

And why it's an excellent example of light prefab and discrete innovation.
