More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.
The amount of money I saw one department paying for several AI services in a school year could cover the University’s pay one price textbook costs for nearly their entire enrolled student body in said department
Colleges could subsidize books for students rather than paying for premium versions of ChatGPT

The United States is taking aim at Canada once again, with a crushing new set of tariffs.
Ultimately, government will need to solve this. But in the same way Canadians are avoiding US alcohol, produce, and other goods, they should get off US tech products too.
Luckily, I have a guide for that.

Getting off US tech: a guide
I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.

Off. The. Streets.
#OtD 28 Jul 1985 Anti-Fascist Action (AFA) was launched at a meeting at @ConwayHall in London, UK. Its dedication to "physical and ideological opposition" to fascism would see it drive numerous far-right groups off the streets. This is a short history: stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/1002...

Slavery had been abolished 5months prior and Black people had migrated in large numbers to major cities like Memphis Tennessee.
1865 was rough.
The war ended, the president was dead, the Klan was formed on Christmas Eve, and white southerners feared a Christmas insurrection. 🧵
