As all the mechanics in my life I know hit their thirties they have either figured out how to get their way to running a shop/management, or their bodies are breaking. To make a living with manual labor in this country is to destroy your body and receive a societal shrug when you’re disabled.
There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

Putting my gender feelings into the void...for real and understandable reasons there isn't really a recognized social role or visual language for "queer woman who is not masc, high femme, or sexy femme". And like...I think my alienation from gender is more about that than anything else.
