Banning "superintelligent" 🤢 AI plays right into industry rhetoric and keeps the focus off immediate, real world harms such as privacy, bias, and labor. Literally the same name of the silly Bostrom book everyone was reading 12 years ago.

Look at that. It’s that easy.

ok so just so we’re clear on the concerns that are taken seriously

❌ it’s terrible for the climate
❌ it’s fuelled by stolen data
❌ it threatens jobs/entire occupations
❌ it’s often just wrong
❌ it’s literally caused actual suicides
✅ one day it might extinct everyone by bioengineering a plague

this is a damn good post from a U.S. Senator and I wish all of them could figure out how to talk like this
Stop calling this a DC makeover. This is an illegal desecration of our capital and a huge waste of American families’ money. DC is sacred ground, and we shouldn’t minimize the real damage being done.

Driving me crazy that a lot of very smart people aren't entertaining the idea that the **AI might kill us all** narrative is kabuki theater -- orchestrated by some of the world's richest people, whose net worth is tied up in people believing their technology is just on the cusp of super intelligence

The international chess Federation banned trans women from playing women's chess.

CHESS.

It's not about fairness. The fairness argument is intended to radicalize people into more violent forms of transphobia.
That rock skipping, yes tossing stones across a pond or river, is a gender segregated sport, should tell you something about how gendered sports are not about fairness of physical ability, and is instead about the male ego

Newsflash. Water's wet. Fire's hot. Ice is cold.
A new report from Luminate has found that long gaps between seasons of streaming TV shows are leading to major losses in viewership.

More than a 1 year gap is seen to largely cause a significant loss in viewership.

I maintain that gutting our regulators poses a much more disastrous threat than AI becoming self-aware and solylent greening the eastern seaboard

yet curiously the press coverage of the former is muted at best, wonder why that is

We must hold the line on this. Slop doesn't equal "bad" it means slop, the byproduct of some automated process. There's plenty of human-generated "content" that is not great, but that's not slop.
Slop does not refer to criticism or mere dislike. You can use even the most colloquial of definitions for slop and all of them at least minimally refer to volume and machine produced.

NEW: The new Apple Watches double as AI-powered listening bugs for generating convo "recaps" or transcripts of any previous 15 seconds. But fear not, Apple says, this data isn't sent to Apple/gets encrypted, speakers aren't ID'd, and there's a chime for the 15-second thing. @lhn.bsky.social reports:
Apple Doesn’t Want You to Worry About the New Apple Watch’s Listening Features
The new Apple Watch includes several “intelligent” listening features that have privacy and security baked in. But the protections can’t change the facts of what the tools do.

What makes you think that they won't be highly rewarded for doing things like this?

There is billions of AI safety money out there for the taking... Like Ilya Sustekever got $2b for a company called Safe Superintelligence that doesn't even have a product
I love how AI researchers are putting their careers on the line to warn the public about the dangers and they're just summarily dismissed as marketing gimmicks.

If I may get on my soap box: No Kings is a tactic. It is not the strategy and no one involved in putting it on considers it sufficient on its own. It's a mass show of defiance that's also served as an onramp to the kind of local organizing work that's necessary to shift power
I see on-the-ground evidence *on a daily basis* of how people's involvement in No Kings, Indivisible, 50501 has grown into ICE monitoring, flock camera protests, city council blowups over data centers and running for office. THAT was the point of No Kings, all along, from my perspective.
