Well, it took a little longer than expected, but the postmortem for Memento Manor is now available for your reading pleasure! Warning to the less-nerdy: this one is very long (just over 18k words, wowee). I suggest looking at the topics that interest you!

Currently still in the middle of the final write-up for Memento Manor! Oh boy, it is a BIG one. Having spent a year creating this game, I have so much to talk about, both for the purpose of sharing what I have learned with anyone interested and also for self-reflection on what has been learned.

Oh! And did I mention? You can play Memento Manor with a gamepad as well as keyboard!

If you have any feedback or find any bugs along the way, please contact me here! Or even if you're just having a good time with the game, all input is appreciated. <3

And as always... Many thanks to all of the generous asset creators on itch who provide gorgeous art and music for us lowly programmers who want to spend our time building functionality.

It's because of them that I can focus on the parts I love to build and enjoy bringing the assets to life!

Phew. Well, now! That took a while, but I am both happy with the result and ready for bigger things.

I'll be working on a reasonably-sized writeup about this whole project in the coming week! But for now, please check out Memento Manor, linked in the previous post.

I hope you enjoy your stay...

Are you the right person for the job?

The clock is ticking. Will you help her? The doors will open soon...

Who do you want to be...?

Oh, and... I feel like it would be a bit rude if I didn't show a tiny little teaser.

I have been awfully busy with my current project (far busier than anyone at my experience level should be...), but I'm happy to say progress has been constant and steady, albeit slower than I anticipated. Par for the course, you might say, in regard to games development.

Update: I think I've defeated the doors.
August 26, 2025 at 10:18 AM
Why are doors so complicated? Too much opening, shutting, validating, and signalling. It's like having to look both ways before crossing the road; otherwise, you'll slip under the fabric of reality.

500 million years, huh? Yeah, I doubt any instance of my game will be running for that long. This'll do.
July 16, 2025 at 11:17 AM
I'm really starting to feel the current project come to life. However, I particularly want to nail down the main game loop before I'm 100% convinced this project is working and worth talking about yet.

In my spare time between working on my current project, I've been playing the new Deltarune chapters. Highly recommend them! I've had a blast. A certain battle in it has been living rent-free in my head for a few days now.

I love getting ambitious with my games, but I think it's important that I keep it a little more reasonable in the future (at least for a bit). The current project is coming along nicely, though, and when I have something worth teasing about it, I'll certainly talk more on that.
June 14, 2025 at 1:08 PM
I'm essentially investing in the future of my skills as a developer by taking the time to explore and understand now so that I have a solid foundation later. However, I want to try and develop smaller projects for a short while after this current project for portfolio reasons.
June 14, 2025 at 1:07 PM
I enjoy backwards engineering the ideas I have and seeing how I can implement them with my current skills. It teaches me about how things are made, why they are made in such ways, and what approaches do or don't work. This method certainly increases development time, but I've learned a lot from it.
June 14, 2025 at 1:03 PM
Apologies, folks! I haven't updated in a while as I've been hard at work on the next project. I'm still fairly new to game dev overall, and learning many new techniques takes quite some time! My current project, in particular, requires many new features that I've never programmed before.
June 14, 2025 at 12:59 PM
Well now! That was less brief than I thought it would be! I love a good ramble, even if sometimes it ends up a bit spontaneous or poorly structured.

I think "ramble" is just my cheat word to spew many words into the ether in an unstructured manner.

I think in conclusion, I've continued to come up with better system ideas that I'll take into future development with me, but I don't think I want to go back and make those changes to Phantom Forest unless it's completely necessary.

In some ways, I kind of want it to exist for what it is.
April 26, 2025 at 11:42 AM
One last thing I think is worth mentioning, and this was a system implemented fairly last minute.

In the same way that I could've tracked obtained IDs, I could've done the same for the weapon progression system. I ended up just preventing weapons from being sold to keep it simple.
