Clockers was fine. Read Lush Life last year and thought it was much better. Still have an appetite for Richard Price despite thinking Clockers was a little weak.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

I really enjoyed Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane. Biography told mostly through analysis of the art he made, how the decisions made painting reflect the character of the painter. I really loved that format, would love to read more biographies arranged like it.

Sorry bluesky hasn’t been much on my radar as my social media time has been shrinking. To a sudoku app haha.

I loved Wuthering Heights and regret reading a digital copy from my phone. Can’t put my finger on how but it definitely altered the experience negatively. Liked the recent movie,

Reading Wuthering Heights after seeing the recent film and loving it. Currently loving the book more!

Aberration in the Heartland of the Real was awesome, fun, and accessible.

I know I said I would be busy reading women the rest of the year but first i need to read two books by men, neither are very long.

First up: Tortilla Flat. East of Eden is probably my eternal fave, so it seems weird I

Finished Our Man in Havana and it will not be especially memorable. MOVING ON.

I often decide on a pattern of what I will read next then abandon it as soon as another book is finished, so that will probably happen again, but I will declare it here anyway:

Women are half the population yet they

I’ve moved on yo Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene and i’m half way through and it feels like another miss for me. Probably maybe finish it by the end of the day.

Then I think I should seriously consider not reading any white men the rest of the year.

I finished Manhattan Transfer like two weeks ago, felt nothing, and don’t expect much of it to ever resonate with me. I took my trade paper copy, along with three other hastily chosen books, and donated them at my local used bookstore.

Maybe not cool of me to say so but im at ltl czars right now and its hot but not ready and i feel like i’m in an episode of idocracy the series. Moreso because of the slackjawed customers than the disinterested pizza makrs.

Love in the time of cholera was greatly enjoyed. Again, weird why i waited so long to read it after loving 100 years. Will definitely return to him.

Now, onto Dos Passos, frankly because i have turned over picking my next read to my girlfriend. I show her a stack of unread books i own, let her

Love in the time of Co okera is an absolute banger and i feel like a dumb dumb for sitting on it for so long. Savoring every last page.

Never came around on blood meridian. I liked it a bit better before the end, but that shiz is jot for me.

Love in the time of cholera IS. Shiz nabbed me in the first 10 pages i’m all sold out on this feller.

Now more than halfway through blood meridian and it feels like a damn slog, i am barely interested at all. The prose is curious, it’s my first mccarthy, but thus far i do not see anything that has brought this book so much attention. I am not invested in any of it. Idc how masterful the setting

Finished and enjoyed Mystic River. Thought it was a much better book than movie.

Remember feeling uninterested when i saw the movie in like 2003 or whenever it came out, rewatched it after finishing book, felt the same way. Portions were tight with suspense, but the sum came up short.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

Alright i flipped on then back off again on Sabbath’s Theater. It felt like the wrong book, then made me laugh out loud a few times and I decided I liked it, but then it changed back, felt like wrong book at wrong time again. Not unhappy i read it, and i would like some more roth, i think.

I think in this mode pretty often:

Will this be a paragraph, a page, or a chapter in the Post 9/11 USA history course. Will the course be popular? Amongst who? When will they be engrossed reading about this period? Easy to see how disorienting it will be.
history teacher in 50 years: So in September, that’s when the president signed an executive order criminalizing anti-fascism and saying all resistance would be crushed

student: oh so that’s when the whole country realized they were living under fascism

teacher: haha what? oh no lol not at all. no.

I went with Sabbath’s Theater and afraid the timing is off - reads like a book i might have devoured at another time but now plumbing the depths of depravity is not exactly my jam.
October 1, 2025 at 11:01 PM
I loved

Lush Life by Richard Price

I have added some of his other titles to my reading list.

Shortly will start Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth

Or

Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos

Or

Mystic River by Dennis Lehane

Feel free to weigh in and tell me what to read next!
