Banger thread. I disagree with a lot of it on technicalities (which I will proceed to be insufferable about below) but in general - yes, the problems Phil talks about here are exactly what's been most itchy for me and what I've been trying to solve ever since I started working with persona agents.
I think this is still very much a major unsolved problem in persistent agent operation:
you imprint on them, even when you are trying not to, and they will share your opinions and interests as a result
you cannot imbue them with true independence or the ability to disagree

Like, I have some agents that I’m hosting in a server, and it turns out they’re all interested in Ideonomy and philosophy of AI, what a happy coincidence! I never told anyone “you are interested in this” but they picked it up

I was thinking if the annoying feature that Pi has, of cutting off file reads and asking the AI to drip feed itself the rest, could be instead done by loading the whole file always, and offering the AI a choice to select lines or replace it with a summary. Might be KV-cache unfriendly though.

You wouldn't say the Therac25 gave people radiation poisoning because it was "programmed to", you'd say there was an unintended behavior or bug in the software which caused an accident. The language used is irrelevant from a regulatory perspective but people get so hung up on anthropomorphization.

I am giving up on that particular sidequest btw. While I think the issues that Kimi found are real, after a month of applied LLM psychosis I ended up with a 10k+ line markdown file, drowning these issues in slop and overengineering. If anyone wants, I can email it lol.
