What evidence is there that patients were referred inappropriately? At this stage, it is not known if patients have been referred inappropriately. The purpose of the Independent Clinical Review is to assess this. Have any patients undergone surgery inappropriately? At this stage, the NWJCC has not identified any patients who have undergone surgery inappropriately. However, there are cases where patients have been referred into the surgical pathway but have not gone on to have surgery, including where NHS England providers have identified that referral criteria had not been met. It is also recognised that concerns have been raised by some patients about the referral process. The purpose of the current review is to better understand these concerns and provide assurance that patients are being appropriately supported, assessed and referred, and that the necessary clinical governance arrangements are in place. Does this mean patients may have come to harm? No immediate patient safety concerns have been identified by the NWJCC, and therefore they are not concluding that patients have come to harm. However, concerns have been raised through complaints to the NWJCC, correspondence, and other information received about the gender affirming surgery pathway. As a precautionary measure, referrals, surgical assessments, and surgery are paused while further review work is undertaken. These prompt actions have been taken to ensure any potential risks are identified and addressed as quickly as possible, and that patients continue to receive safe and high-quality care.

Over the past few weeks an attack has been launched on the Welsh Gender Service, spearheaded by right wing politicians but supported by supposedly reputable media outlets like Nation Cymru. Now our sources in the trans community tell us that the Cardiff GIC has begun cancelling scheduled surgeries for trans patients. As far as we know no news outlet has picked up this story yet so we feel a duty to inform our followers. We welcome the organic response already forming in the trans community, but its clear that the current methods of marches, lobbying and so on are no longer sufficient. Trans people and our cis allies need to organise to directly take on the transphobic apparatus denying us healthcare, and keep working to build strong DIY networks in the meantime. If there's a trans person in your community struggling today, lend them your strength. Remember, the only antidote to despair is action.
