The snobbishness about this comes in part from the fact you can no longer pay all your bills doing a minimum wage job. If you work 35hrs a week you should be able to pay rent, pay utilities, buy food & have a little left over for a few beers on a Friday. This never used to be a controversial view.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with working a minimum wage retail job no matter your age. A job is a job. And this performative, ignorant gatekeeping by those saying it's not a "proper job" can get in the bin. Work is work.

If every statement about Extinction Rebellion had opened with "Climate change is the single biggest issue facing humanity, and we understand why people have legitimate concerns the world isn't doing enough to tackle it…" this approach might be *faintly* defensible. But they didn't, and it isn't.
They’re just pouring more fuel onto the fire. Why are the racists consistently called legitimate, whilst in a world that’s burning people who protest over climate change and genocide are not being afforded even a smidgeon of the same grace?

A shirtless white man, in the street with a knife in his hand, having attacked and wounded five people, allegedly shouting anti-Muslim slogans is the sixth story on the BBC UK news page. There is absolutely no doubt at all this would be the lead story if attacker and intended victims were reversed.

This is inhumane and disgusting. We are talking about already traumatised and vulnerable individuals, including women and children. This is what the UK is funding. This is what happens when policies are based on cruelty and xenophobia, and Labour are pushing them.

It simply is not possible to believe Britain is dominated by “fanatical leftists” unless you are an absolutely deranged far right crank, and indeed Melanie is one. Doesn’t seem to have harmed her career, does it?

These are the real people of Belfast. Thousands of anti-fascists rally against the far-right at Belfast City Hall today. They sent a clear message that racism is not wanted in their city. Things you love to see ✊❤

This is incredibly sad news. Giles has been at the very heart of the UK online legal community from the beginning. He had unparalleled expertise, was the scourge of bad landlords, the most effective public communicator of legal concepts and always made time to help those who needed it.

7 hours of silence from the Prime Minister.

The US is using UK bases. The President is openly talking about destroying a civilisation.

And Downing Street says... nothing.

If you won’t speak up now, when will you?
It's now been 3 hours since our supposed "ally" Donald Trump threatened genocide on a country of 93 million people.

We've had absolutely nothing from the UK government.

This doesn't come in a vacuum either - every day the US & Israel have been murdering innocent people.

just to be clear, everyone, when 8 pm EDT comes and goes, regardless of what does or does not happen, the president still threatened genocide and war crimes and we should still impeach, arrest, and try him

Trump may not carry out the threat.

But the fact he even made such a threat means he should immediately be removed from office.

For that is the purpose of a constitution with checks and balances.

Something which tends to be missing from the media and political debate surrounding asylum are the voices of those most affected. Today I have listened to people talking about how the current system and changes affect them. Please listen to the end. People are dying because of government policies👇
The changes announced by the Home Secretary forcing people seeking asylum to resubmit applications every 2.5 years leave people in limbo, unable to rebuild their lives, left to face yet more stress and fear. We spoke to our members about how they felt, you can hear their responses here👇

For non-German speakers:

“Dear media, I can’t stand the headline "No agreement between the US and Denmark” any longer. If an armed man storms a bank, you don't run the headline: "Robber and cashier can't reach an agreement on money transfer." Stop framing imperial aggression as normal diplomacy.”

I’m so sick of seeing Farage and co on TV all the bloody time. They now know that if thy hold a press conference on any day ending in a ‘y’, they will be given endless coverage and broadcasting hours. All this for a party that could fit all of its MPs into a hatchback car.
