New Zealand's least-known, world famous actor, producer & director. 100 years ago, I directed a little silent film about the Phantom of the Opera.

It's me, hi. I'm the problem, it's me.
I also have a sideline interest in silent film; well, a certain world-famous little-known Kiwi/Hollywood silent film actor/director/writer/producer, at least…and I write about him, here: rupertjulian.com

Nice to see one of Elsie’s films (The Dream Lady, 1918) included in this list, put together by @oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social !
For this week’s Silent Sundays, I wrote about five silent films directed by women that I think should be added to the National Film Registry — an how you can nominate them before this year’s deadline, which is coming up soon!

This is excellent. Many of Rupert & Elsie's first films were made by Lois Weber! And I'm told she also edited the 1925 Phantom Of The Opera after Rupert left the project (for whatever reason).
Friends, I just heard from Women in Film and Media Pittsburgh — they’re creating an annual Lois Weber Award! I’m so happy that the city of her birth continues to recognize her. I cried tears of joy when a state historical marker was installed at her birthplace in 2019. I teared up again today. 🥹

Great news for Irving Thalberg's birthday.

The Warner Archive Blu-ray of LETTY LYNTON (1932) includes the documentary IRVING THALBERG: PRINCE OF HOLLYWOOD (2005) as a special feature.

Both are making their home video debut! Coming June 30.

It occurred to me recently that a number of Rupert and Elsie’s films have been (amazingly!) restored in the past few years, and I should really tell people about this—so here’s a list of all the ones I can think of. Let me know if you hear of any others! www.rupertjulian.com/blog-archive...

Always nice to see a mention of Elsie Jane Wilson’s work, I’ve really got to watch more of it myself!

Born in Sydney, Elsie met Rupert when they were touring together in JC Williamson theatre productions around Australia, and married in 1906 before moving to New York in 1912, then to Hollywood.
For this week’s Silent Sundays, I’m highlighting five silent films to watch for Women's History Month, featuring films directed by Alice Guy Blaché, Mabel Normand, Lois Weber, Marion E. Wong, and Elsie Jane Wilson.

Trying not to get TOO excited about this, BUT…unbelievably, segments of Rupert’s 1930 film The Cat Creeps have been found in an archive?!

“…although it's not complete, it does give us an overarching view of how the film looked from start to finish.”

Nice to see one of Rupert’s films included in this @flicker-alley.bsky.social post for Silent Movie Day! Although he would undoubtedly argue Von Stroheim didn’t deserve a credit…I’ve got a copy of their Blu-Ray release of Merry-Go-Round, just need to find time to enjoy it!

One of the very first articles I found about Rupert was in American Cinematographer magazine written by Scott Macqueen, which spanned two issues from 1989 that I was able to find at the Wellington Library in New Zealand. And now it's online, with some amazing images I've never seen elsewhere!
