Hi, vernacular architectural historian here! So what’s happened here is basically yeah that’s a gate to hell
Found this gate in York. It had a standard lock, plus a padlock and a chain holding it shut. It was very very securely closed. The only thing on the other side is a blank wall. The only conclusion I can make is that this is a magic portal to hell.

When the Hookland Tourist Board put out its I-See book for children to spot things on their holidays, they didn't expect a negative reaction from parents. The national press judged it 'morbid' and a 'terrible encouragement for the visiting of witch's graves, ossuaries and haunted hanging trees'.

The Odyssey! I have read, translated and compressed it into a handy half hour podcast for you. Here’s your quick guide on BBC Sounds. Infidelity and monsters aplenty…

Initially I wasn’t going to submit this illustration to the publisher but the editor at Penguin Books called it a “corker”, in it went.

106 years ago today, on May 7th, an undergraduate at Christchurch College, Oxford, drank a glass of port then left through the main gates for a walk. I've been thinking about him, & his walk, for years now. It's taken a long time for me to figure out why - why I've kept returning, near obsessed.

To writers, boneyards are lithic libraries. We borrow from them the names of the dead to clothe our characters. We read their stones and find whole stories to tell in their economy of words. We gather the whispers of the dead to give our tales life. – #DAKilroy, 1982 #Writing
