Last night, a glancing reference to London 0, Hull 4 from Chris Packham on Springwatch got me thinking about one thing and another.

This to me is a deep dark blow striking at the heart of that it means to be human, ceding the spark of imagination that animates our species to a machine-aggregated simulacrum, an indifferent digital mesh that can only corrode and diminish who we are.

My latest for The New York Times: a look at the life & legacy of the late great D. Boon. Visited San Pedro to talk to the surviving Minutemen, Mike Watt and George Hurley, as they continue to carry forward the spirit of Boon and the band. Gift link here: www.nytimes.com/2026/03/26/a...

Tim Ingold describes Creativity as a process of ‘Undergoing’. I like that. It’s not a product or endpoint. Not even something that’s ever really ‘done’. It’s a constant process. Something that has to be experienced. If you skip the process, it’s not creative.
as a culture we have really given "ideas" way too much credit. ideas are a dime a dozen. they happen all the time. the magic is way more in the doing, and the doing's diminished stature is linked to lack of respect for labor and, more recently, skill and expertise.

Just a quick update for the curious that given the total amount of purchases, this has now raised at least nearly $65,000 for Letters Charity, and of course possibly more if people pay over the amount. Great to see! A few hours left, who wants to see it get to $100K? Spread the word!
Holy heck, Fugazi just released the 1992 Albini sessions for Bandcamp Friday! Proceeds going to Letters Charity.

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

Dave Ball was not some bloke in the background of Soft Cell – he drove their startling, subversive sound
Far more than a mute foil to Marc Almond, Ball brought his love of northern soul and strange electronics to bear on some of Britain’s most uncompromising pop

Totally fake band, AI-generated “psychadelic folk,” polluting streaming playlists, 300k listeners, fake bio with fake quote from Billboard. This has never been about facilitating art—it’s one more way for big tech to siphon as much money from artists as possible.
The Velvet Sundown are a seemingly AI-generated band with 325k Spotify listeners
Fully AI-generated music is only accounting for a tiny proportion of streams on services like Spotify and Deezer at the moment.

Among other shows, I’ll always remember Nitzer Ebb opening for DM on the US leg of the World Violation Tour, not least because it frightened enough of the latter’s recently-acquired Top 40 fans to let me slide down into the first few rows from the cheap seats. RIP Douglas McCarthy.
Ah, that’s terribly sad news. RIP Douglas McCarthy. One of the greatest frontman ever. #nitzerebb
