Thinking about the UK gov report "National Security Assessment on Global Ecosystems", Feb 2026.

The language is incredibly stark. And it's *national security*, not exactly from tree-huggers:

"Global ecosystem degradation & collapse threaten UK national security and prosperity... (high confidence)"

Laughably, stag hunts claim they chase deer for "research and observation", a loophole in the Hunting Act. Two hounds are allowed, so they also run relays of hounds in twos, backed by quad bikes, until the stag collapses and is shot. Defra must close every exemption, not one.

Exxon is annoyed EU is insisting on some kind of CO2 capture

Makes most sense if you think oil company advocacy for CCS is more about pretending to politicians they have an answer for climate change, rather than their actual willingness to do anything about it

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

When I discuss huge systemic issues, people say "but what I can I do?" When I mention something meaningful you can do immediately, people say (as the replies here show) "but what's the point, in the face of the huge systemic issues?"
There are, it seems, plenty of people who want to be helpless.
It's a point I've been trying to make for a long time: there is no good way to meet even 10% of current demand for animal products. They trash the living world, whichever way you do it. If you want to reduce your impact, switch to a plant-based diet. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Sorry to re-up this, but the media silence on the massive, country-changing shift towards arbitrary justice and authoritarianism is almost the most astonishing aspect of the case. The new dispensation is being normalised even as it's happening.
Please spread it far and wide. We need to know. Thanks
Both the government and the Court of Appeal now treat protesters as terrorists and terrorists as protesters. It's hard to accept that a "Labour" government is imposing rightwing authoritarianism on the UK, but please read this column to see what's happening.+🧵
