Got my new compositor running enough to run noctalia with it. Definitely underestimated the things I’d have to implement to make that work smoothly. Been a good way to get things rounded out more quickly though. Prob gonna make a custom bar and stuff to go with it.

This weekend’s fun — I’m building out a Wayland compositor that works well in NixOS based, webtop style containers as well as microVMs where you don’t have a GPU to allocate.

Tonight’s experiment: NixOS running in a webtop-style container. Got it working with Niri already, seeing if I can get a couple other DEs working for fun.

I love having good homelab o11y. I’m running Talos, and just realized why etcd is mad half the time (honeycomb canvas FTW). Accidentally put a slow microSD card in one of the Pi4s last time I redid it 🤦♂️
I’ll get around to adding SSDs eventually, but was awesome to find a quick root cause.

I wish GitHub supported some kind of ARC runners for user-wide repo support similar to org support. I know you can name which repos, but love the simplicity for orgs and ARC runners.

Had a super fun time last weekend rebuilding ripgrep in Go, doing some AI driven optimization. I was able to get it to beat most benchmarks across platforms, and learned a good amount along the way.

Bought a fountain pen on a whim and think I’m hooked. I’d been going all in with AI note taking, assistants, etc. I was getting solid coaching notes too but feeling like I couldn’t keep anything in my head anymore. It’s refreshing going back to pen and paper for tasks and notes.

Building with AI has made me even more healthily detached from what I make for fun. Naming used to be hard and feel permanent. Now I just enjoy making up names that make me laugh. Did I release a crate this morning for ts client generation from Axum routes called axfetchum? Yeah. And I’m delighted.

Finally moved the homelab to @honeycomb.io and the o11y 2.0 gains for agents hype is real. Game changer using it with an agent. Fixed a weird tracing issue with like 2 prompts with Claude (using the skill/MCP) to review, find and fix.
