The Iran war is speeding up the shift away from fossil fuels.

That's one reason I'm hopeful about electrification. I told @news.abc.net.au why, in a piece alongside Fatih Birol @iea.org and António Guterres. 🧵

Unintended consequences of war in Iran are helping the climate
The Iran war is turbocharging global electrification. But experts say the global grid needs to roughly double in size, as infrastructure bottlenecks prevent a clean energy revolution.

It was like a “Sputnik moment” in reverse.

Firms operate within a policy environment.

Get the policy wrong at a critical juncture, and your lead disappears.
good point from @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social, a lot of US carmakers being caught flatfooted by Chinese EVs can be chalked up to Trump www.nytimes.com/2024/09/11/o...

Two things to learn from this.
1. The rightwing newspapers are lobby groups whose purpose is to advance the class interest of their proprietors.
2. Lobbyists for the rich and powerful lose their jobs if they are not prepared to lie.

Organisations like Our World in Data and folk like Steven Pinker would have us believe that everything is getting better because lines are travelling a certain way on charts.

This week's guest @smillermcdonald.bsky.social thoroughly debunks that.

Norris has scored more points this season than Leclerc and Sir Hamilton combined. Such has been the downfall of Ferrari. They were just 14pts away from winning constructors title last year.

Epic drive. Got P3 despite getting an unfair penalty and doing like all of the race on a single set of tyres.
Up into P3 for Kimi Antonelli 👏It's a double @[email protected] podium in Las Vegas! #F1 #LasVegasGP

BTC now at 85,000. There is no intrinsic value. It is purely driven by market forces based on sentiment. Also it generates no income or pays any dividend. Neither is it nice or shiny like gold and silver.
Bitcoin returns have been pathetic in last 4 yrs. From 69k to 90k in 4 yrs is not great. ETH is -ve. So many other tokens are invented and go worthless in weeks and months. Eventually, BTC might also have the same fate as other tokens.

He is out of touch by choice. He can choose to pay close attention to the details of the operations of his Formula 1 team if he’ d like. Instead Elkann hides behind the curtains only to appear when the opportunity to place blame in the media serves him best. But the Chairman should be seen not heard
In a season where the team has done its best to protect itself from the narrative-hungry media, using the press to drive a wedge between the team and its drivers makes John Elkann look like the out-of-touch billionaire he is.

Ferrari fan mentality;”:

- want the entire team to be changed after 2022 (Fred is hired and proceeds to clean house)

- unnecessarily hype up each car and get mad a rebuilding team that has brand new people is not winning the championship by a landslide at the end of a reg era

F1 broadcasts are bad at their jobs.

They don't provide relevant information to fans during broadcasts and spread conspiracy theories instead of looking at data.

Today's commentary surrounding Ferrari is a clear example, and it's become a theme that leads to doomerism.

Substack:
The Media are Culprits in Ferrari Doomerism
Ferrari brings the talk with good and bad performance, but the media are complicit in driving negativity and irresponsible narratives that feed doomerism in online spaces.
