Photo taken at Forest Farm NR ~ Cardiff ~ South Wales A young Green Woodpecker (fledgling) leaves its tree-cavity nest around June, appearing as a streaky, pale-bellied bird with a slight, dull red crown and black moustache. It often lands on the ground, learning to hunt ants with a long, sticky tongue, appearing clumsy yet, sometimes, vocal. They are shy but may visit lawns, often accompanied by a parent for food training, sometimes clinging awkwardly to trees. Appearance: Unlike the solid olive-green adult, the youngster is heavily speckled and streaky, appearing lighter in colour, making it look "greyish green" or mottled rather than bright green. Behaviour (Grounding): They frequently land directly onto grass or near the base of trees, where they might seem stuck or awkward, rather than high in the branches immediately. Movement & Sound: They make a "laughing" call (yaffle) and are often heard calling out loudly for food in gardens before they are seen. Distinctive Shape: Even as a juvenile, they possess the unmistakable large head, long beak, and short tail characteristic of a woodpecker, often feeding while hunched over on the ground. Flight: Their first flights are often short, fluttering hops, often moving from a low branch to the ground.

I've been to my home hairdressing salon for a wash, cut & (blow dry still to come). We (that is me & me) established I've no special plans for the weekend, summer holidays are a thing of the past for me (that was a bit of a conversation stopper) & yes, Xmas seems a long time ago.

I wondered why there were so many fireworks going off around here y'day. It's because today is the start of the Chinese Lunar year. It's the year of the snake.
I was born in the Year of the Goat which apparently makes me intelligent, romantic and compassionate.
I'll go with that.
