i feel like a message that is missing in the midterms is that….republicans control everything?

it feels like a basic thing we should really be saying over and over. this is all their choice. unhappy? look who is in the drivers seat.

The Kennedy Center joins the Reflecting Pool, Lafayette Park and sort of the White House itself (no tours) where supposed renovations have led to indefinite loss of public access.
After taxpayer funded plans/construction, these places are fenced off and closed down, not improved.

spoke to Lina Khan today about the AI madness and what the hell we should be doing to hold these companies accountable (in a way that takes their power seriously but doesn't buy into every narrative) full pod coming in the AM!
AI firms are subject to already-existing laws, Lina Khan tells @cwarzel.bsky.social: Part of the conversation around regulating AI “seems to assume that these current developments are happening in some legal vacuum,” she adds, “and that is just false.”

We told everyone that programming wasn't the hard part, but no one believed us.

The reason LLMs can excrete sort-of-okay code is that sort-of-okay code has been a commodity good for 20+ years. Then, just like now, the bottleneck was understanding what people actually want.

We should just publicly fund political campaigns

Everyone gets $500

we don’t teach young people short-term history, so it was weird when i realized that gen z had no idea that so many gen x and millennials spent our high school years protesting george w bush

and not just because of the wars, but because mosques were being targeted and sikh men were being attacked
There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

Unplug the internet and it saves files until network restored. LG says its TVs don't record conversations. Evidence begs to differ. 216 million in homes /Braiinsforge

Some folks will claim that this is hyperbolic, but what I wish people would understand is that tech initiatives like this serve as a means of eroding consent and lower the barrier for the persistent capture of people’s image, voice, data, or whatever else a gadget can glean.

Apple's always-listening AI feature promises neat summaries of your daily conversations, but it forces everyone around you into a nonconsensual recording experiment.

A year ago today, we got a call from the movie theatre chain we were working with saying they could no longer release Jeffrey Epstein: Bad Pedophile because Charlie Kirk got shot.

Our reaction was at first "???"

Then we decided to release it in 50+ indie theatres nationwide instead. Worked out!

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now.

NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

NEW: The new Apple Watches double as AI-powered listening bugs for generating convo "recaps" or transcripts of any previous 15 seconds. But fear not, Apple says, this data isn't sent to Apple/gets encrypted, speakers aren't ID'd, and there's a chime for the 15-second thing. @lhn.bsky.social reports:
Apple Doesn’t Want You to Worry About the New Apple Watch’s Listening Features
The new Apple Watch includes several “intelligent” listening features that have privacy and security baked in. But the protections can’t change the facts of what the tools do.
