India's Margin-Free stores are volume-driven, self-sustaining discount retail chain, beats market prices through supply-chain efficiency. In contrast, NYC’s proposed municipal groceries are publicly funded municipal utility designed to absorb financial losses in exchange for broader social outcomes.

NYC Model: Designed as a targeted intervention to address food insecurity in specific low-income neighborhoods.

India Model: Anyone can shop there, and store owners run their branches as profitable franchise businesses—they just operate on high volume and minimal per-item profit margins.

But both operate on fundamentally different structural, economic, and operational frameworks.

NYC Model: Relying on public funding to cover expenses. The city covers expensive real estate overhead (lease/property taxes) so that operational costs stay artificially low, allowing prices to drop.

Last we checked we are not in a drought zone. Water is not a scarce commodity. The bags have become smaller, the quality of ice lesser, except the price that just keeps going up. Don't even get us started on imported chocolate costs, which has more than doubled at big box stores?
