once every two weeks i think about how, in some idealized world of endless free time, i would be casually studying higher level calculus and chemistry just for fun. mind you, my academic interests were historical economics, finance, and programming language theory.

If this is correct, then the real threat isn't the LLMs but the humans who construct, control, and prompt them, and who have done so with enormous recklessness and negligence.
But I suppose it's convenient to attribute it all to an intelligent but malevolent machine hellbent on the apocalypse.
