Labour’s housing masterplan: make it easier to borrow more for overpriced homes, push prices higher, then call it “help”. Brilliant way to make housing even less affordable while pretending you’ve fixed the problem.

The people of Piddington are quite right. Dumping 1,250 people into a rural area with little to do, in a building without the facilities to support them, isn’t a plan. It’s official negligence: make the decision from a desk, leave locals to deal with the consequences. #Piddington

It’s a lot more nuanced than it looks. But obviously “the villagers are racist” is far easier for the permanently outraged brigade than actually thinking about whether dumping 1,250 people somewhere with bugger-all to do is a sensible idea.

The real danger isn’t simply that the far right wins.

It’s that mainstream politicians become so detached from ordinary voters that the far right becomes the only place people think they can vote for change.

That’s how political systems lose legitimacy.

And dismissing millions of voters as racists, fascists or idiots isn’t an electoral strategy.

If mainstream parties don’t understand why people are voting this way, they shouldn’t be surprised when those voters keep doing it.

There’s also a massive difference between saying “the far right is winning everywhere” and saying “the far right is becoming electorally powerful.”

The first is nonsense.

The second is increasingly difficult to deny.

Immigration. Borders. Crime. Integration. National identity.

Issues that were once treated as politically toxic are now central to European elections.

The far right didn’t necessarily win the argument.

But it has forced everyone else to have the argument.

And this is the bit the European liberal establishment keeps missing.

You don’t need the far right to win outright to change politics.

If 20–25% of voters are willing to vote for them, every other party has to start asking why.

Germany’s AfD has gone from protest party to a serious electoral force.

France’s National Rally remains hugely competitive.

Italy has a right-wing government.

Austria, Portugal, Sweden and others are seeing the same basic trend.

This isn’t a fringe phenomenon anymore.

The far right hasn’t“taken over” Europe. That’s lazy analysis.

But pretending it isn’t having major electoral success is just as stupid.

Across Europe,far-right parties are winning serious chunks of the vote and forcing mainstream parties to respond.

The RNLI’s willingness to respond should never become an excuse for government to keep expanding what volunteers are expected to do. Goodwill isn’t an infinite resource. #RNLI

If we’re quietly turning a volunteer charity into another emergency service because the state needs more capacity, let’s have that debate honestly. Don’t hide it behind volunteer goodwill. #RNLI

The trustees have a difficult job: help people in genuine danger while protecting the volunteers who make the service possible. That balance becomes harder as demands keep increasing. #RNLI

Supporting the RNLI means protecting its volunteers too. We shouldn’t wait until people are physically or psychologically broken before admitting we’ve asked too much of them. #RNLI

These volunteers have jobs, families and lives outside the RNLI. They’re not an endless pool of emergency responders who can absorb ever-increasing demands without consequences. #RNLI

Suicide callouts deserve particular attention too. Repeatedly sending volunteers into traumatic incidents, especially around known suicide hotspots, carries a psychological cost. #RNLI

We’re asking volunteers to deal with increasingly complex incidents while facing growing political and public hostility. At some point, you have to ask whether that’s sustainable. #RNLI

And now volunteers face increasing public hostility, with some portraying the RNLI as little more than a “taxi service” for migrants crossing the Channel. That hostility has consequences. #RNLI

This shouldn’t be a left-versus-right argument. Austerity matters. Social change matters. Crime matters. Police leadership matters. But none answers the fundamental question: is the British policing model still fit for purpose, and if not, what should replace it? #Policing #UKPolitics

And there is an uncomfortable choice. We can keep the existing model and accept that some incidents will stretch forces severely. Or we can redesign it. But redesigning policing means deciding what Britain actually expects its police to do—and paying for the capability to do it. #UK
