Magazine Road in Cork city, gets its name from the fact that a gunpowder magazine (store) was located there in 1775. It was on the route between the Gunpowder Mills in Ballincollig and the city docks where the Gunpowder was loaded onto ships. 1/3

Visited the fascinating Spike Island today. Largely built due to the threat of Napoleon's armies landing in Ireland to stir up a rebellion against the British and use Ireland as a staging post to invade Britain.

Napoleon wanted a large forum built in Milan. A design was prepared but nothing was ever built.
Today's Foundation Napoleon article chronicles the project and links to the original drawings.

Excellent map of Greenways in Ireland!
New map work! Greenways of Ireland. Something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Surprising just how many there are, and even more in planning #GreenwaysIreland #ActiveTravel #Cycling

Ordnance Stone at Ballincollig Regional Park, Cork. British military property was demarcated by these stones. The yellow arrow on the map shows it to be one of the 2 stones to the west of the 'Gunpowder Proving House' which no longer exists.

The French army which invaded Russia in 1812 had many units from other countries - willing and unwilling allies. While France supplied most troops, Poles, Swiss, Italian and Germans provided sizeable contingents.
It was the biggest army at the time (about 600,000) but also the biggest disaster.

220 years ago on this day in 1805, the Treaty of Pressburg was signed. After their defeat at Austerlitz, the Austrians were forced to give territory to the French.
The signing took place in the Primatial Palace in Bratislava.
