Paid visit to Oxford Street. Not to buy anything, you understand but to exercise my right as a freeborn Englishman to wander around aimlessly on the bit that is now, according to some black cab drivers, an act of vandalism worse than anything the Nazis ever did. Let's hope it lasts a thousand years.

When are we going to see direct-vision cab doors on these lethal HGV rigs?
Many of the refuse collection trucks have had them for years, but the construction business seems to be dragging its feet.

We get that tackling #motornormativity is difficult but #ActiveNeighbourhoods are primarily a public health intervention and one which is popular once they’ve bedded in.

Why won’t government make a case for #ActiveTravel & oblige councils to act? @elsieblundellmp.bsky.social @walkridegm.org.uk

These floating bus stops are a concern for some in Ireland - they work really well*!

A mum and her two kids safely cycling via a floating bus stop in the Netherlands. Any risk of conflict with pedestrians is far preferable to sharing the road with buses.

Watch how the cycle track also prioritises cyclists at side roads before seamlessly continuing into a fietsstraat.

@peterwalker99.bsky.social has written a number of excellent books on the benefits of #ActiveTravel and #IncidentalActivity.

#TheMiraclePill is well worth a read.

The sad thing is that in opposition @louisehaighmp.bsky.social understood and talked about the use of transport policy, including #ActiveTravel, to achieve other policy aims including #IncidentalActivity and preventative healthcare.

But she wasn’t able to deliver that in government

Sooner or later a British town or city is going to go all in on #ActiveTravel and then we’ll see.

My understanding is that the effect of #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods is synergistic, but has anyone yet found out?
October 30, 2026 at 7:29 PM
I think we worked out that at the current rate of delivery, Greater Manchester’s #ActiveTravel network would be complete some time next century.

This really shouldn’t be as difficult as it plainly seems to be?

It’s so tiring the way every penny of #ActiveTravel funding has to be fought for, and then fought to be retained.

Every penny spent on walking and cycling is returned fivefold. Every penny spent on roads will struggle to break even.

The local MP said he would lobby the government to change it's funding rules so active travel money did not have to be spent on infrastructure projects like this.

My favourite illustration of the flaws of AI was when carefully curated research using it had me travelling to 15 completely fictitious woonerfs in four Polish cities this summer.

#ActiveTravel schemes in West Sussex included the Chichester–Emsworth #ChEmRoute and schemes for the Manhood Peninsula.
Failures to implement them by previous administrations have resulted in diversions, delays and traffic jams as soon as part of the A286 Selsey Road is closed for 7 weeks.
This cheery little @theguardian.com piece about basically every country including UK talking up climate action targets then doing diddly squat reminds me of how London politicians are too often fine words on climate, active travel, car use, but just words. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Four years ago countries made a historic deal to save nature. Is it dead in the water?
So far not a single target of the plan has been met. As negotiators convene for Cop17, the pressure is on to find a way to honour the commitments made at previous summits

Potentially interesting as #ActiveTravel has huge potential as preventative healthcare. But that would require Highways departments, and transport portfolio holders, to understand this and act on it…

“everyone lives, works, learns and plays in environments in which healthier food is the most convenient and default option and in surroundings that support being physically active”?

There is something in this - if all councillors/MPs hear is the small but noisy minority of voices opposing #ActiveTravel then they’ll assume that this is what everyone thinks.

Write to your councillors and MP today! @walkridegm.org.uk
Meanwhile, for cycle activists who'll spend hours on Bluesky complaining about this, yet few would consider writing to or god forbid meeting with their MP or Cllrs to challenge these assertions. Write to your MP if this is happening in your constituency, write to your Cllrs!

It’s so exhausting. Every penny of #ActiveTravel funding has to be fought for, then fought to be retained, even though we know (unlike spending on driving) it will be returned more than fivefold in savings on the NHS and social care.
