#ChEmRoute
#ActiveTravel schemes in West Sussex included the Chichester–Emsworth #ChEmRoute and schemes for the Manhood Peninsula.
Failures to implement them by previous administrations have resulted in diversions, delays and traffic jams as soon as part of the A286 Selsey Road is closed for 7 weeks.
This cheery little @theguardian.com piece about basically every country including UK talking up climate action targets then doing diddly squat reminds me of how London politicians are too often fine words on climate, active travel, car use, but just words. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Four years ago countries made a historic deal to save nature. Is it dead in the water?
So far not a single target of the plan has been met. As negotiators convene for Cop17, the pressure is on to find a way to honour the commitments made at previous summits

I have been working with Chichester District Cycle Forum, Chichester DC and @WSHighways.bsky.social *for years* to promote the LCWIP from Chichester to Emsworth called #ChEmRoute.
August 28, 2026 at 8:48 AM
#ChEmRoute would be a 6-mile route along the A259, a mainly straight, flat road corridor. Transport studies have already been done.
There are two obstacles:
1. One village will not agree to 20mph on its section of the route
2. Lack of funding from Active Travel England @ategov.bsky.social

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “We’re giving people real choice in how they travel by making buses, trains and active travel cheaper..and investing £4.5bn in #cycling and walking.”
I’ll be asking for some of this to fund the LCWIP called ChEmRoute.

Cycling, wheeling and walking schemes given £133m. £5M for WSCC for Active Travel. Go for CHEMroute.

I have been campaigning for a dedicated cycle route between Chichester and Emsworth since a cyclist was killed in Fishbourne in 2020. This #ChEmRoute would be a protected lane for 6 miles alongside the A259, but has been delayed due to funding shortages. How many more #cyclists will die?
Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Be thankful for small victories. We have the A259, a long straight road between Chichester and Emsworth that has no continuous off-Road cycle lane. Plans for the LTN120-compatible ChEmRoute have been derailed by the local highway authority, to the dismay of local cyclists and Councillors.

Today is #WorldBicycleDay
West Sussex is a great place for both recreational and commute #cycling. But WSCC has not succeeded in implementing the 6-mile #ChEmRoute between Chichester and Emsworth along the A259. Signposts and green paving strips are not enough to increase road safety.

Great news for local #cyclists in our County: West Sussex County Council has been given £5,464,466 by Active Travel England.
Hopefully at least some of this will be used for the #ChEmRoute between Chichester and Emsworth that has been delayed for years.

We are passionate about #ActiveTravel in our District, and support schemes such as the Chichester–Emsworth ChEmRoute to promote road safety for cyclists and pedestrians in Harbour Villages, and reduce climate impacts.
Centurion Way is an off-road route to @westdean.ac.uk, ideal for all age groups.
Great to welcome Lib Dem leader, Ed Davey to Thame today to back our campaign for a safe route to Haddenham.

We cycled along the Phoenix Trail to show how a Greenway can connect communities and support greener, healthier travel.

Thank you to Ed, for supporting this important project!
