Thank you sincerely. I'd like to know how it landed — especially if it didn't.
First novel. Nobody has told me the truth about it yet who wasn't obliged to 🤣

What's the most random thing you've read or listened to in the last year? Not the good one. The one that wasn't on your list. But took a top 10 find of the year!
Mine tend to arrive by accident and turn out to be keepers

You can't tell, while you're writing, which parts are yours and which are inspired from whoever you were reading that month. You find out in the edit, when a sentence sounds like someone else and you have to decide whether that's a problem, but its like just inspiration leading.

I resisted them for years on the grounds that it wasn't proper reading, which was a wrong assumption. Two hours a day I didn't know I had and the joy of reading has opened up.

It's this. Posting. Saying "I wrote a book" to people who didn't ask.
Twenty years of a job where you keep your head down is poor preparation. Doing it anyway.

None of that was in the plan. All of it turned out to be the job.

What double opt-in is. That consent has to be freely given and can't be bundled with a free download. That an SPF record exists, and that mine was missing.
Nobody mentions that this is the job now. :)

Ten people who actually want the book are worth more than a thousand who grabbed a free download and forgot by Tuesday.
I'd rather build the first kind slowly than fake the second.

You've got a small mailing list. Genuinely small. What do you actually send them before the book is out?
I don't want to pad it to look busy. Going quiet for months seems worse. Interested in what worked for you.

Not many somebodies. But I've spent the best part of a year on a book nobody has read, and this week a few strangers put their email in a box because they want to know when it lands.
I've thought about that more than is reasonable.

For anyone who's worked somewhere that runs on thresholds — security, medicine, audit, aviation.
What's the smallest thing that ever made you escalate? The detail that justified nothing on paper, that you raised anyway, and were right about.
I collect these as inspirations

Every place I've worked had one of these. The queue where resolved things go. Nobody reads it, because by definition there's nothing worth reading in it.
Which makes it the best place to hide.

A thing that never wobbles isn't efficient. Real systems drift — load, latency, retries, the small imprecisions that build up under real conditions.
So when something holds exactly, that's not a machine being tidy. That's somebody being careful.

Every pass took something out or revised something I hadn't seen. That's what they were for, catching what I could.

I took the leap and bought mine - what's everyone's opinion or what route did you take?
Of everything I've learned doing this, I felt strongly about this - how about you?

I carried this book in my head for ten months. Weeks at a time without opening it.
I assumed I'd lose my place. I never did. It was all just sitting there, waiting.
I found that genuinely cool.

Not for the prose. For the procedure.
It turns on a process that has real checks and balances, and I knew someone who does that job would read it and know instantly if I'd cheated.
Getting it right mattered more than getting it finished.

Then I stopped. I had a beginning and no idea what came after it.
A friend told me to build a story arc. Rough outline, chapter by chapter, enough to see the shape.
That one piece of advice unlocked the whole book.

Not a laptop. No cafes, no writing on trains, no romantic notion of working anywhere.
One room, one chair, one machine that doesn't move. The writing has an address.
I needed it to be somewhere I had to go, not something I carried.
