Very excited to be leading an #ERCStG project at the @liverpooluni.bsky.social! We will develop a new kind of Monte Carlo tool for next-generation precision #particlephysics experiments that improves how photons are simulated.

Our new algorithm will be integrated in the McMule programme (which celebrated its 10th Anniversary earlier this year) mule-tools.gitlab.io. In McMule, we only simulate scattering at fixed-order (usually α²) so this project would be a major extension.

This behaviour can be used to build a Monte Carlo event generator that can simulate the emission of arbitrarily many soft photons. As part of this project, I want to use what we know about the next-to-leading power behaviour, i.e. the 1/E term, to extend these simulations.

The YFS approximation works very well and was critical e.g. at LEP collider at CERN in the 90s. However, it only captures the leading power soft behaviour at 1/E² (there's a great thread by @martinmbauer.bsky.social on the Other Site explaining this structure x.com/martinmbauer...)

This is a more technical thread, introducing one of the most beautiful results from Steven Weinberg: The soft photon theorem It answers the question why massless spin 1 bosons are associated with conserved charges and why massless spin 2 bosons interact like a graviton 🧵1/19

For many experiments such as the proposed #MUonE experiment at @cern.bsky.social, emission of low-energy (soft) photons are a main source of theoretical uncertainties. This is usually modelled using the approach by Yennie, Frautschi and Suura (YFS) inspirehep.net/literature/2...

I really really enjoyed this book, read it in like two days (interrupted only by work). Highly recommend!

Fully agree, every time I played with it, it was also extremely useless. The only thing it could do halfway well is proofreading and there are less problematic alternatives. If the future really has to rely on large-scale intellectual property theft, I'm not sure I want any part in it..

the check is done client-side by polling a specific bsky.app endpoint as @uncenter.dev's link pointed out. I guess the neatest solution for android or iOS would be to recompile the app (which is opensource) without this check..?

yeah.. the reputation I sometimes see German trains having internationally is totally undeserved 😕 at least you get most of your money back in the UK for this kind of delay but Deutsche Bahn doesn't even do that

.. quite sad to see how quickly this turned into an immigration scandal rather than the government cover-up scandal it is 😥
