Very excited to be leading an #ERCStG project at the @liverpooluni.bsky.social! We will develop a new kind of Monte Carlo tool for next-generation precision #particlephysics experiments that improves how photons are simulated.

A brief 🧵
📣 Good news! 📣

Results of the ERC 2026 Starting Grant call are out!

The media must be held to account. The rascist, relentless hounding of Jason Arday trussed up as some kind of "trial by public opinion" is unconscionable. My heart goes out to his family at this time. Academia has to do better. We have to do better.

After seeing the headline "SpaceX IPO: How to Buy and Why You Shouldn't" on @barrons.com, I decided it was time to read the prospectus. I'm only a few pages in and folks... the implications of this document ...

Do you want to go on a journey with me? Because I'm about to enter the rabbit hole.

Have worried about how everyone is just shrugging their shoulders about the inevitability of the 'AI' rollout (even if they see its problems). Nice to see some pushback by @karenhao.bsky.social, framing 'AI' as the political project it so clearly is
Data centres using as much energy as London. Exploitation of workers and the working class. A total lack of democracy in something set to change all our lives.

Tony Blair says we should all embrace AI now. AI expert Karen Hao says he's wrong on every level

Love this idea!
On New Year's Eve, my daughter half-jokingly suggested that I resolve to spend 2026 embroidering a news diary--sewing one small icon to represent each day's events. I thought-- sure, I'll do it; might be a good way to process everything. Well, I'm one week in, and oof, what a knotty year it's been.

I made this Foundation-themed tote bag for a friend but kept forgetting to actually post the pictures.. the art work is mostly from the recent TV show because I couldn't find original work by Asimov. Very happy with how it turned out, esp. since this was my first attempt at goldwork 🪡

Blaming behaviour like this (or that Nazi salute) on being neurodivergent (autism in this case) is extremely offensive to the vast, vast majority of ND folk who don't go around harassing people.. makes me sick every time someone tries this 😡
"How do you get away with dropping your trousers, talking about your cock & then blaming your neurological diversity?"

Some nice positive news out of Florida for a change. Happy Pride everyone 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ and thanks for sharing @erininthemorning.com
1. Florida banned cities from lighting up bridges rainbow colors for Pride.

So the people of Jacksonville did it themselves using flashlights and gels.

They opened the drawbridge to block them.

So they marched to a different bridge.

After Labour's lurch right on immigration now this.. why exactly are these people still trying to court Reform voters (who wouldn't vote for you anyway) while alienating their own base? It clearly worked very well for the Dems all these times..
A group of Labour MPs, peers and supporters write:

“We should legislate to root out DEI in hiring practices, sentencing decisions and wherever else we find it in our public bodies.”

Devastated to see how quickly this has arrived in the UK mainstream.

I've heard so many stories like this in private, great to see Rachel putting it out there 👏
A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”
Absurd we still need to go through this
