Electric trucks aren’t taking off: manufacturers fear multimillion-euro fines for failing to decarbonize

European truck manufacturers have joined forces to push the EU for more flexibility on CO2 reduction targets given the difficulty of selling the electric vehicles already available. Tesla finally unveils the electric Semi in Europe. The major European truck and bus manufacturers issued a joint warning at the Hannover IAA Transportation fair: the transition to emission-free heavy transport is not progressing at the necessary pace, and companies are heading toward a scenario of heavy penalties if demand for electric vehicles does not take off. The seven leading European truck and bus manufacturers have urged the European Union to postpone by three years, until 2033, the deadline for meeting the CO2 reduction targets set for 2030. The request is an unusual move by an industry that, despite having invested billions of euros in the development of electric and hydrogen trucks. Those new models were presented at the Hannover fair.
