Huang rejects AI doomsday predictions

1m

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dismissed apocalyptic AI extinction scenarios as exaggerated, said AI would not wipe out humanity within a few years, and called such warnings irresponsible.

This is a really good and sober assessment of "sexy apocalypse" doomer nonsense.
So @dwillner.bsky.social & I took some of our discussion thread from Bluesky last week regarding the "sexy apocalypse" predictions from the EA-aligned "AI Safety" folks, and wrote an article from the perspective (Dave's) of those who do *real* risk mitigation work. The apocalypse will not be sexy.
The Apocalypse Will Not Be Sexy

When we picture the end of the world, the first thing that springs to mind is typically the cinematic version of "things going wrong." We picture the musical score rising...

How AI destroys institutions
honestly some of the most apocalyptic impacts of "AI" will be shit like this, and most of the doomsday dipshits predicting SkyNet can't be bothered to notice or care

I'm not suggesting that this will save the day, but indications that at least some people on both sides are interested in at least managing the risk a major crisis precipitated by AI is a positive development.

The AI doomerism being pushed by the tech oligarchs is meant to reinforce the idea that AI is inevitable, unstoppable, and impossible to regulate.

But it's not. It's just going to require that we go back to global cooperation, hard as it may sound. www.thestar.com/opinion/star...

Crucial argument for a halt, at least for now, in the rush to recursive self-improvement — AI developing the next generation of AI — from NYT’s Ezra Klein. We cannot leave it to the AI companies to judge what’s safe or what’s good for society.

I loved this AI doomer illustration in the @washingtonpost for this story by @nitashatiku: washingtonpost.com/technology/2026/09/21/is-this-how-world-ends-extinction-scenarios-are-taking-over-ai-debate/?itid=hp-top-table-main_p001_f006. (Also, will the robots who replace us reinvent gender?)

Please don't tell me that the solution to the huge number of applications is having AI assess (AI-generated) applications. And please also don't tell me that AI is "saving us time".
This ridiculous number of applications is, in my view, the result of 2 nightmare developments happening concurrently 1.the precariousness of the job market for young PhD graduates which then fuels further: 2.the AI tools enabling overproduction of proposals. #Research #ERC #ResearchFunding #Academia

AI seems able to condense moods and expectations in a society from the web. Future paths may partly depend on these, also interacting with political change. This may lead to surprising capabilities in describing possible futures, as an example from 20 months ago shows. bsky.app/profile/leid...
AIs are making it easier for everyone to predict the future. That leaves open how far forecasters—human and machine—are from the theoretical limit of what can be known about the future

It's sad to see this framing repeated endlessly.
Most critics of AI don't deny the 'lived experience' (sigh) of AI users & especially boosters; they denounce the fanaticism, the disregard for hazards, and the perceived lack of a moral compass.
This looks to me like guilty feeling rationalization.

Rather than being a great democratiser, AI is currently forcing organisations to put up more gates and barriers to keep out the low quality avalanche.

This is about regulating AI but the same applies to safety net and ALMPs in response to anticipated disruption from AI. Folks on the hill want "something for AI" but standard sectoral training and employment policy, guaranteed income, etc. are still the solutions because disruption is disruption.
