Yes, this is a huge El Niño. No, @theguardian.com we do not have a reliable thousand year-long record of El Niño (e.g. a continuous reconstruction of the Niño3 or Niño3.4 SST index) so this statement is not warranted. What's the attribution for that claim?
This year’s El Niño is on course to be the largest in at least *1,000* years. That’s going to drive excess heat into the atmosphere and combined with man-made heating will make 2027 the hottest year ever recorded.

Yes, this is a huge El Niño. No, @theguardian.com we do not have a reliable thousand year-long record of El Niño (e.g. a continuous reconstruction of the Niño3 or Niño3.4 SST index) so this statement is not warranted. What's the attribution for that claim?

It’s official, the 2026 El Niño has broken a record for the highest ocean anomaly in 170+ years… Incredibly reaching that threshold a full 2 months ahead of 2015’s record of +3.02C set on Nov 18th.

There is a half century of work using historical documentary evidence to assess past El Nino behavior (with limited fidelity). This evidence is even discussed in the original MBH98 "hockey stick" article: michaelmann.net/sites/defaul...

Sadly the gun has been well and truly jumped by the @theguardian.com with this one. El Niño is not yet the strongest on record, even in the latest weekly data. But it seems almost inevitable that it will be.
