"Any [US-China] A.I. talks will be complicated by the fact that neither country is likely to agree to anything that restrains their own competitive ability, Mr. Mehta said."
Trump and Xi to Discuss A.I. Risks and Competition at US-China Summit (Gift Article)
Artificial intelligence is on the agenda when leaders from the United States and China meet this week. But with little consensus on a path forward, expectations are limited.

Keep your expectations low for this week’s visit of XI to the United States when it comes to AI regulation.

But be aware of how high are the stakes for humanity.

(Also, what exactly *is* the supposed mechanism for an AI apocalypse? Is it that they hack into the nuclear launch codes, or something? I can tell you what are the many varied mechanisms by which climate change, and its intersections with society, will produce injury, but…)

Trump: "The very same people who said we'll all be dead in 12 years because of global warming -- a name since reborn to climate change because the planet was cooling, not warming -- these are the same people that are now saying AI is going to kill us all, that robots are going to attack us."

Some US special ops "intelligence" analyst used a crappy chatbot (likely produced by Palantir, given how they luuuuuuuv that crappy company) that nearly started a war with China by hallucinating shit:

The issue with AI was never that the average wage of the employed might go down. On the contrary, as productivity increases some of that increase will be captured by the employed labor.

Hasn't someone done the obvious thing yet and taught the #AI 🤖 to play noughts and crosses, followed up with some iterative rounds of Global Thermonuclear War? I mean it worked for Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy.

AI hallucination of Chinese nuclear components almost led to US military attack
But the military's overall use of AI seems to be accelerating.

I've started seeing an anti-AI "Fintech expert" showing up regularly in my LinkedIn feed, usually shared by anti-AI people. The posts sounded like slop, so I checked, and yep, you guessed it.

One of the things about people who don't use AI is that they have no idea what AI sounds like.

101 antitrust initiatives on generative AI by antitrust agencies, Feb 2023 to July 2026.

A Database of Antitrust Initiatives Targeting Generative AI - Network Law Review
Antitrust agencies are increasingly interested in generative AI. This can be good news. As Sandy Pentland and I wrote last year (here), the competitive dynamics in this space can be supported by a careful antitrust agenda. While the AI Act should be improved if the EU wants innovation to flourish (see this article), enforcement actions […]

An apocalyptic worldview – blending racial hierarchy, genetic “optimisation” and even climate-driven population culling – circulated inside the elite, founder-linked networks shaping Silicon Valley (and the AI industry) today.

In 2017, I wrote that AI needed international standards, as borders were irrelevant where technology was concerned. I was ignored and now it seems that we are engaged in a race to the bottom with Trump.

Watching doctors on the BBC saying how dangerous & harmful AI is proving by giving vulnerable people false medical advice. They say it's bad, but AI is here & we must adapt to it. It's as if governments, laws, & regulations don't exist - we've been convinced by tech-bros to be helpless.
